Lay Down Sammy

(1 Samuel 3:1-9)
parody of Lay Down Sally written and performed by Eric Clapton

There First Samuel three verse one
You want to you can read along and see
You know back when Samuel’s a boy
Comes awake, he hears a voice, and starts to freak
And so he tells the priest

(And Eli says…)
Lay down Sammy, and reset your alarm
Go right back it wasn’t me who called you
Lay down Sammy, get some sleep, you’ll need it soon
I’ve been lying down all night long, and now so should you

Sam ain’t met the Lord Most High
He who made the moon and stars above
Understanding’s yet to rise
When he’s called a second time he ups and leaves
And so he tells the priest

(And Eli says…)
Lay down Sammy, and reset your alarm
Go right back it wasn’t me who called you
Lay down Sammy, get some sleep, you’ll need it soon
I’ve been lying down all night long, and now so should you

Not long before the morning light
Calls again and wakes Sam dreamily
So up he goes to see Eli
And Eli he wonders now it just might be
That it’s the Lord who speaks

Lay down Sammy, and lest you be alarmed
Don’t you think it might be God who’s called you
Lay down Sammy, do not sleep, but listen soon
God’s been trying all night long just to talk to you

Lay down Sammy, and lest you be alarmed
Don’t you think it might be God who’s called you
Lay down Sammy, do not sleep, but listen soon
God’s been trying all night long just to talk to you

This song was written in one hour, very late one night. I was down on the Gold Coast, on Impact Summer 2002-2003, an outreach run by Youth With A Mission. Having learnt the chords to the original song not long before, I thought it would make a good parody. It took about two seconds to come up with ‘Sammy’ instead of ‘Sally’, and the rest just flowed from there. An hour later, I had a complete song, and I performed it at the Love Feast on the final night, 10 January 2003. This was also one of three parodies I performed live & acoustic on the Impromptu Stage at Sonfest 2003 in Boonah.
